Wonders of the Small Church

The small church has incredible importance and value, although it may not carry the pomp of churches in Europe and elsewhere. I have one particular small church in mind: ours.

Holy Trinity is pleased to announce the publication of Dr Barbara E. Lacey’s newest book, The Illustrated Imprints of Isaiah Thomas. Barbara is one of our church’s most committed members, and her presence in our midst on a regular basis is a great blessing and joy.

Dr Lacey’s latest book offers a representative sampling of the illustrated publications of Isiah Thomas, an 18th century Massachusetts printer, which shows the great variety of imprints that used images to enhance or modify the meaning of the associated texts. It is part of the Transactions series of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia, a scholarly project founded by Benjamin Franklin that has published the series continuously since 1771.

This volume will be of particular interest to students of early American history and art, to American Studies scholars, and to general readers curious about early book publication and illustrations.

Now professor emerita of history at the University of St Joseph in West Hartford, CT, for more than two decades, Dr Lacey has previously presented papers on imagery in early American publications at conferences is France, the Netherlands, Ireland, England, and Spain. Her other publications include The World of Hannah Heaton (2003), the spiritual diary of an 18h century Connecticut farm woman, and From Sacred to Secular: Visual Images in Early American Publications (2007). Barbara has also published articles in The New England Quarterly, The William and Mary Quarterly, The Journal of Social History, and other scholarly journals.
