Wonders of the Small Church

The small church has incredible importance and value, although it may not carry the pomp of churches in Europe and elsewhere. I have one particular small church in mind: ours.

With sadness, yet with hope in the Resurrection of Christ, the Holy Trinity Church community announces and mourns the repose on February 5, 2021, of Mr +Viktor Ivanovich Sukharev of Brighton, Massachusetts, and from the former Soviet Union prior to emigrating along with his wife, Paraskeva, to the United States. Viktor was an active member at Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Allston, MA, for many years.

Over the past two decades, Viktor visited Holy Trinity in Willimantic, along with Paraskeva, his two children, son Deacon Andrey Sukharev, and daughter, Anna Friar, his son-in-law, Deacon Aaron Friar, and six grandchildren, on many occasions.

'Both Jason and I are both very saddened to hear of Deacon Andrey’s father's passing," Holy Trinity member, Denise Geeza said, on receiving word of Viktor's death. "He was such a kind man with a great presence in his love of the Church. May we all strive to be more like him."

Mr Sukharev, and Paraskeva, have been very generous to our church gifting us with many liturgical items since the early 2000's. On February 3, 2008, while present with us, a plaque was hung in the back of our nave noting their generosity. A second plaque was presented to them as well, which they planned to hang in their residence in Moscow.

“To think of Viktor as simply only being someone who was generous to our church community, would be missing the point of his life entirely," Holy Trinity pastor, V. Rev. Marc Vranes, said. "There was something much, much more and that is why people gravitated to him. He had a sense of holiness and humility about him, and somehow, people wanted to be close to him and to be warmed and enveloped in those spiritual gifts of kindness, meekness, and love. His love of Christ, and support of many churches, will never be forgotten.”

A Pannikhida Service was held on Sunday morning, February 7, 2021, at Holy Trinity.

The link to Viktor's burial Service, held Sunday, February 7, at 1:30 in the afternoon at Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, can be found below.

May the Memory of Viktor Ivanovich be eternal in the eyes of God. May God comfort all those who loved him.
